21st – 23rd November 2019 THIS WEEK

We are delighted to have permission to present two episodes of Sue Limb’s Gloomsbury – the comical BBC Radio 4 series.

Gloomsbury lampoons the Bloomsbury Group, an arty and amorous clique active in the 1920s and 1930s. Major figures include Vera Sackcloth-Vest (Vita Sackville-West), writer, gardener and same-sex seducer; her husband Henry Mickleton (Harold Nicolson), diplomat, writer and part-time homosexual; and their friends Ginny and Lionel Fox (Virginia and Leonard Woolf) – she the palpitating novelist, he a perpetually worried political thinker and publisher. Also present are the seductive Venus Traduces (Violet Trefusis) Vera’s grand passion, and D.H.Lollipop (D.H.Lawrence) – the writer of saucy books which are often seized by the police. D.H.Lollipop’s wife is a German aristocrat with an imperious manner and voracious sexual appetite. She was the inspiration for Lady Chatterley.
The servants include Mr and Mrs Gosling, who help with cooking and gardening at Sizzlinghurst Castle. (Sissinghurst in Kent – even the castles have aliases.)
In Venice they meet Peggy Googleheim, (Guggenheim) a rich American art collector. Originally a comedy series for Radio 4, Gloomsbury ran for several years between 2015 and 2018.
